George's Story.
Born in 1876 at Knutsford, son of butcher, John and Amelia Hamman, of, Cross Town, Knutsford. A family of eight children, George, Bertha, Amelia, Mary, James, Henry, Ada and Annie. In 1901, George was a boarder with Mrs Elizabeth Armstrong at Cross Town; he was working as a bricklayer. In the third quarter of 1911, George married Ann Bailey, registered in Manchester; they set up home at 52, Mobberley Road, Knutsford.
George enlisted at Knutsford; he was placed with the 5th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. In the February, 1916, the 5th Cheshire’s, a Pioneer Battalion, were transferred from the 5th Division to the 56th Division. September 1916, saw the Battalion, who were stationed at Bois De Faviere, engaged in digging a fire line in front of the British front line, parallel to N.W. edge of Bouleaux Wood. Along with, Lewis Gunners, Sappers, Signallers and Pioneers they were employed in connecting up a fire line trench, 3 strong points in front of Gropi trench. The formed trench was called Ranger Trench. During this operation they had 3 officers wounded 11 other ranks killed and 21 other ranks wounded of which, one died later. George was one of those that were killed, Thursday, 21 September 1916, aged 40 years.
