John's Story.

He was the son of the late Thomas Nield and Priscilla Nield. As a boy, he had attended Stockport Sunday School and was a member of the St George's Lads Drill Company. John joined the army at Stockport and his service number suggests that this will have been as a conscript during 1916. He was killed during the Battle of the Lys. He had two older brothers - Thomas, who was killed whilst serving with the 15th Battalion, Royal Scots and Squire who is understood to have been awarded the French Croix de Guerre for an act of bravery.
