Thomas Edward's Story.
Little is known for certain about Thomas Naven except that he enlisted at Stockport, probably into the 6th Battalion (original service number) and subsequently transferred to the 7th Battalion. His original service number was 4317. Thomas Edward Naven's birth was registered at Hayfield, Derbyshire between March and May 1890. This is probably the Thomas Naven, listed by the 1901 Census as living in Compstall, aged 17 and working as a labourer at a calico print works. Naven is a comparatively uncommon name, and both of these references are probably the man recorded on the war Memorial. Thomas Naven is listed in military records as having "died". This normally means that death was from natural causes or an accident unconnected with combat.
