Birkenhead News  05 June 1915

Prisoner Dies in Germany.

We published in our issue of Wednesday a portrait of Private Joe Munt, of the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment, the youngest son of Mrs. Munt, of 2, West View, Lower Tranmere, stating that he was a prisoner of war in Germany. He wrote that although wounded he was “quite safe,” and asked for “some cigs and a cake.”

Whilst the “Birkenhead News” was being published containing the above intimation, Mrs Munt received the War Office note to say that her son had died from wounds whilst in hospital in Germany. The cause of death was haemorrhage caused by being shot in both arms. He was buried in Duisberg Cemetery, Germany.

Private Munt was educated at St. Mary’s Schools, after which he worked for some considerable period at Messrs. Cammell Laird’s, until joining the Army about five years ago, and served in India the whole of the time. When hostilities were declared he returned home, and after two days’ leave left for the front, where he has been missing for some time.

The newspaper article reproduced above refers to Private Munt as Joe Munt, however his correct forename is George as per military records.
