Herbert 's Story.
Herbert was born in Handbridge, Chester in 1893. He lived with his father George, a cabman, & his mother Eliza at 12 Salter's Court, Lower Castle Street. He had 2 brothers, Isaac & James & 3 sisters, Elizabeth, Maria & Jane.Herbert enlisted in Chester. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
The citation reads: 11/3/16
For conspicuous gallantry. Acting as a stretcher bearer Private Moss, on several occasions, displayed great courage & devotion in attending to and making cover for the wounded, under very heavy fire. He died of wounds received in action on the 28th July 1916. He is buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
