George's Story.

Born Crewe, October 22, 1893. Son of George and Elizabeth Latham of 58, Ford Lane, Crewe, and was working in Crewe Works as a fitter’s labourer before joining the Navy on February 26, 1912. After spells on HMS Renown and HMS Minerva, he joined the Queen Mary on September 4, 1913. During the Battle of Jutland, the Queen Mary, of the 1st Battle Cruiser Squadron, blew up after receiving several direct hits from the Derfflinger and Seydlitz, when a fire ignited her forward magazine. The total loss of life was 57 officers and 1,209 ratings. His brother John was killed in action in March 1916. A total of 9 Crewe men were killed during the Jutland battle.
