Birkenhead News 22 July 1916Another “Cheshire” Fallen.
Field Street Mother Bereaved.
Mrs. Joyce, of 9, Field Street, received the official intimation on Monday of the death in action of her son, Private J. Joyce, of the Cheshire Regiment. The young man was seriously wounded on Saturday, 15th inst., and died in hospital at Rouen on Sunday, 17th. A particularly sad feature of the case is that on Tuesday Mrs. Joyce received a cheery letter from her son saying that he was well, and everything was all right, while all the while she knew her son was dead.
In pre-war days Private Joyce resided with his mother, and worked on the docks as a labourer. He received his education at Our Lady’s School, and was well-known in Birkenhead. Mrs. Joyce has another son serving with the colours, also a son-in-law and two nephews. Private Joyce joined upon the outbreak of war, and had been ten months at the front before receiving the fatal wound. Mrs. Joyce and family have every sympathy in their sad bereavement.
