John's Story.

Birkenhead News  09 September 1916

Two Cousins Killed.

Lieutenant and Lance-Corporal

Second Lieut. John Reid, of the K.L.R., was killed in action on August 18th. He enlisted in the 4th Cheshires on August 11th, 1914 which was the 20th anniversary of his birthday, and received his commission in the K.L.R. a year later, and went to the front on July 14th. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reid of 60, Whetstone Lane, Birkenhead, have as yet received no particulars of his death, save the telegram stating that he was killed in action.

Second-Lieut. Reid was educated at Claughton Higher Grade School, and at the Liverpool Institute. Before enlisting he was articled to Messrs. Morter and Dobie, architects and surveyors, The Temple, Liverpool. The late officer’s medical officer has written a sympathetic letter to Mr. and Mrs. Reid. In it he says :- “John was a young man of great promise. Beneath a quiet, winsome and kindly disposition hid a marked ability of action and a great strength of character.” Second-lieut. Reid’s brother held a commission for a time in the K.L.R., but he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps now serving at the front.

Lance-Corpl. John Reid, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reid, of 12, Hollybank Road, who was killed on August 12, was a cousin of 2nd Lieut. Reid.
