John Edward's Story.

John is remembered on the Christ Church Memorial at Barnton, Northwich.

Northwich Guardian article dated 25th January 1918.               MISSING PRIVATE JOHN E. HOLT.
Mr. and Mrs Holt of 9 George Street, Barnton, have received official intimation that their son Private John E. Holt of the Royal Warwicks, had been posted missing. Private Holt is 20 years of age and before joining the Colours in the early part of last year, worked in the smithy of Messrs Brunner Mond and Co. As a boy he was a member of the 2nd Company of the Northwich Boy Scouts.

In January last it was announced in the Guardian that Private John E. Holt, son of Mr. and Mrs J. Holt of 9 George Street, Barnton, had been officially posted as missing and on Saturday news was received by his parents from the War Office that he must now be presumed killed. Private Holt was 20 years of age and before joining the Colours in the early part of last year, worked in the smithy of Messrs Brunner Mond and Co’s works at Winnington. As a boy he was a member of the 2nd Company of the Northwich Boy Scouts.

C.W.G.C. remember a John Edward Holt, Cambrai Memorial Louverval (Panel 3) France. He was with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment “D” Coy., 2nd/7th Bn., Service No 29463, died on the 6th Dec. 1917, aged 20. Son of John and Ann Jane Holt, of 9 George St., Barnton, Northwich.

N.A.M.C. have a medal card for John Holt, Pte., he was initial with the Cheshire Reg’t No 61872 then the Warwickshire Reg’t., No 29463. Awarded the British and Victory medals, T.o.W. & D.o.E. not addressed. There is no reference on the medal card to his death.

B. M. & Co. R.o.H. booklet records a John Edward Holt at the Winnington Works. They record he was with the 2/7th Royal Warwickshire Reg’t., with the comment Presumed Dead.

Cheshirebmd records the birth of a John Edward Holt in 1891 in Northwich and a John Ed. Holt born in 1897, Weaverham. This second lad lines up with his age of 20 when he was killed. The 1911 census records this family living at No9 George Street Barnton, head of the family is John Holt aged 49, Chemical Labourer, born Lymm; Ann Jane aged 44, she had had 7 children, 4 still living with 3 at home, mother was born Barnton; William Earnest aged 22, Chemical Labourer ; Lawrence Alfred aged 20 Shop Assistant (Grocers); John Edward aged 13, at school, all three lads born Barnton.
