Northwich Guardian 25th Aug, 1916. Corporal Samuel Grindley, Norley
The relatives of Corporal Samuel Grindley of Norley, who was in the East Lancashire Regiment, were notified a few days ago that he had been killed in action. Corporal Grindley, who was well known in the neighbourhood and extremely popular, was at one time engaged in business in Weaverham. Letters have been received from officers and men of the regiment expressing sympathy with the family and paying a high tribute to Corporal Grindley’s worth as a soldier. A chum of the deceased, who is now in hospital writes:- “I was wounded by the same shell that killed him. We had been mates together for a good long while. He was not afraid of anything when we were in the trenches or out of them. He was a good solider: there is no mistake about it.” One of the others refers to Corporal Grindley as having been one of his keenest N.C.O’s.
