George James's Story.
George James Whyte was born in Birkenhead on 30th June 1894 to parents George, an engineer, and Christina.In 1901 the family were living at 23 Paterson Street, Birkenhead and George had two brothers and a sister. By 1911 they had moved to 69, Aspinall Street, Birkenhead and George was an apprentice engineer in the firm of Gordon, Alison, and Co.
George enlisted in the Army in September 1914 and was posted to the 1/4th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. He arrived in Gallipoli at the beginning of August 1915 and landed at Suvla Bay on the 8th of that month. A few days later he received a gunshot wound in his upper arm. His wound was of a severe enough nature for him to transported back to England for further treatment but the wound had become infected and he died of septic pneumonia in the Manchester Military Hospital on 20th September 1915.
Private George Whyte was buried in Flaybrick Cemetery, Birkenhead on the 23rd September 1915.
