Cecil Dutton's Story.

Cecil Dutton Darlington was born on the 26th 1893 son of Harry Turley & Lizzie Darlington, he was baptized on the 9th February 1894, in St. Clements Church, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire.  Their address on the Parish Registers was 29, Warwick Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancaster County.  Harry Turley Darlington's occupation was Clerk.

Harry Turlay (sic) Darlington and Lizzie Mitchell married in the June Quarter of 1892 at Prescot (Vol 8b, Page 1035).

I believe that Harry Turley Darlington sadly died in 1895 (Prestwich Vol. 8d Page 331) and Lizzie remarried a William Banks in 1903 at Preston (Preston Vol. 8e Page 1079)

On the 1901 Lizzie is seen living with her married sister Alice Ann Adams, 51,and Husband Frederick, 53 and their daughter Kate, 17.   With her is their Mother Ann Mitchell at 29b West Cliff, Preston, Lancashire.   Lizzie, 35, who by now was a widow, states she is Married, but this could be an enumerator's mistake and she is a Hospital Nurse, (Sick.), no children were with her, so where was Cecil Dutton and Caister Darlington, his sister?  They had 2 servants.   She, I would suppose, have to work to keep the children somewhere

Lizzie Banks is seen on the Passenger List of the ship "Tunisian" departing Liverpool on the 4th April 1907 destined for St. John, Halifax, Canada.   Cecil D. Darlington, her son of 13 years and another child, Caister(sic) Darlington, 11 was also with her, Lizzie's status was "Wife."

However, I cannot find any proof of when he arrived back in England, but obviously did, was it after the 1911 census, although he is an enigma on that, if anyone can help with any information, I would be very grateful.

There are 2 UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927 about Cecil Dutton Darlington, one issued on 1st September, 1915 and one issued on 19th October 1915 in Liverpool, so one would presume he had gone into the Navy, but he was to join the R.A.F.

Cecil Dutton Darlington in the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966

DARLINGTON, Cecil Dutton of 35, Hough Green, Chester, Lieutenant Royal Air Force died on or since 15th August 1918 in France.   Probate Chester 8 January to Lucy Winifred ADAMS, (Wife of Frederick Mitchell ADAMS).   Effects £161 17s. 0d

This confirms that he was living here even though it seems his mother was living in Canada, see the Commonwealth War Graves Commission additional Information:  Son of Mrs. L. Darlington Banks, of Ottawa, Canada.   This proves that Lizzie emigrated to Canada, with William Banks, possibly in 1907, see above.

C D Darlington in the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929 does not mention any Legatee, but mentions transfers of money, one of £61 13s 0d and another of £5.0s 0d, but not to whom they went.

Someone, friend or family, must have loved him and made sure he was to be remembered as his name was put forward for it to go on the Memorial.
