Thomas's Story.
Born in 1893 at Macclesfield, son of Joseph Vernon and Sarah Ann Cowley, living in 1901, at 4, Back Ford Street, Burnage, Lancashire. By 1911, the family had moved to 78, Chapel Street, Levenshulme,
Manchester. Thomas was employed as a painter and paperhanger. He enlisted at Manchester and was drafted to the Western Front where he was killed in action, Sunday, 3 June 1917, aged 24 years.
The war diary for the battalion shows that they were working on Warwick Trench in the Potijze sector of the line from the 1st June, Warwick Lane Trench ran a long the side of Warwick farm to the front line. For the 3rd June it simply states.
Work on Warwick Trench finished, casualties 2 killed 5 wounded. Thomas with Joseph Taylor from Oldham were the two killed.
