Charles's Story.

Birkenhead News  01 July 1916

Died for his Country.

Footballer and Patriot.

Mr. Charles Conley, of 141 Bridge Street, Birkenhead, has received official intimation of the death of his only son Charles, a signaller of the Cheshire Regiment with the Indian Expeditionary Force.

Signaller Conley was a favourite with all who knew him. He was for three years with Messrs. John Irwin, Sons and Co., Ltd., Borough Road, and a popular member of the Prenton Athletic Football Club. He joined the colours on the outbreak of the war, and like a true soldier accepted all difficulties with a cheerful and willing spirit. He saw severe fighting in Gallipoli, where he was wounded, and later took part in the final evacuation at Suvla Bay. He was in action in Mesopotamia without incident, but, unhappily, has succumbed to disease in the Near East.
