BIRKENHEAD BANDSMAN KILLED

Whilst Carrying Wounded Comrade

We regret to announce the death in action of Pte. A Citrine, of “E” Company of the Liverpool Scottish, and of 36 Deveraux Drive, Seacombe. He also died a hero’s death, being killed whilst acting as a stretcher bearer, and whilst actually carrying a wounded comrade on his back. Private Citrine was a popular member of the Birkenhead Borough Prize Band. In his last letter home, he gave a graphic account of his experiences and described as horrifying the sight of German dead in heaps. He concluded his letter by stating that he had just seen Dr. Chavasse, who was tending Capt. McLeod, of Birkenhead, who had been shot through the arm.
