Gallant Officer Killed.
Second-Lieut. Chandler.
An official communication, telling of the death of their son, 2nd Lieut. Jas. Cooke Chandler, Cheshire Regt., and late of the Liverpool Scottish, was received on Sunday morning by Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Chandler, 22 Hollybank Road, Birkenhead. Lieut. Chandler, who was 20 years of age, was educated at the Birkenhead Institute, and afterwards at the Institute, Walton. On leaving school he joined the staff of Mr. Alfred Holt, Ocean Steamship Co. (Blue Funnel Line), in January 1914, and immediately after the outbreak of hostilities (August 5th, 1914), he joined the Liverpool Scottish, at the age of 18 ½ years, and with the first draft in January, 1915, was dispatched to France. Shortly before Christmas last year he came home for his commission, and went through a course of training. He returned to France about the middle of April this year.
The Vicar of St. Paul’s Church, Argyle Street, will conduct a short memorial service in the church tonight, at eight o’clock.
