Peter's Story.
Birkenhead News 24 March 1917HESWALL GUARDSMAN FALLS.
Twice Previously Wounded.
On Tuesday Mrs. Campbell, of Pole Hill Road, Heswall, received word from the War Office that her husband, Pte. Peter Campbell, of the Grenadier Guards, had been killed in action. Pte. Campbell had been wounded on two separate occasions before he met his death, each time coming home on a period of leave. It is nine months since he returned to France after recovering from his second wound. In a letter his captain says :- “I deeply regret that I have to inform you that your husband was killed in action on the night of the 4th and 5th inst. He was shot through the heart by a sniper and suffered no pain. He was buried by the chaplain, and a cross has been erected over his grave. Allow me to offer my deepest sympathy, sincere and heartfelt. – Francis Needham, Capt.”
Pte. Campbell leaves a widow and child to mourn his loss, for whom much sympathy is felt.
