Birkenhead News 06 May 1916Dacre Street Soldier Killed
Reservist Falls in Battle.
The sad news came through from the War Office on Wednesday morning to Mrs. Nevin, who lives at 77, Dacre Street, that her husband had fallen in battle on April 9th whilst in action somewhere in the East.
Private John Nevin, an old soldier, had served in the Army nineteen years, and at the outbreak of the war rejoined, attaching himself to the 6th South Lancashires. He proceeded to France early in 1915, and was invalided home with frost bite. He was afterwards sent to the Dardanelles, and from there to Egypt. Some months ago, he was attached to the Indian Expeditionary Force. He was home for a very short leave (24 hours) last August.
Before rejoining this gallant old soldier was working at Tate’s, the sugar refiners, of Liverpool, and prior to that he was for the period of eight years a barman with the late Mr. Kelly, of the Boar’s Head Hotel. Private Nevin leaves a young widow and three children.
