Birkenhead News 05 September 1917

Killed going for a stretcher

Official news has been received by Mrs. Whelan, 12, Kent Place, of the death in action of her son, Pte Thomas Whelan, who would have been 29 on September 4th. He joined the Cheshire Regt. early in 1916, and on arrival in France 12 months ago was transferred to another unit. Prior to joining the army he was for many years with Mr. J. P. Evans, of Exmouth Street, and latterly was with Mr. John Hughes, grocer. I writing to his widowed mother a chum says :- “He was going for a stretcher for a wounded officer when he was killed and death was instantaneous. He was a good chum, and no one misses him more than I. He died a noble death and like a hero. Sympathy is expressed from all the boys in the Platoon.” Prior to joining the Army Pte. Whelan resided at 12 Kent Place with his widowed mother.
