Stanley's Story.

Birkenhead News  17 March 1915

ONE OF SEVEN.

Private Stanley Rule Killed.

In our issue of January 2nd we published portraits of the seven sons of Mr. and Mrs. Rule, of 81, Cleveland Street, all of whom were serving with the colours. They were :- Richard, Royal Engineers; David, Royal Engineers (formerly Royal Horse Artillery); John, a well-known Birkenhead postman, 15th Hussars; William, Royal Army Medical Corps; Albert, Naval Brigade; Stanley, 3rd Cheshires; and Benjamin, 8th Cheshires. In addition, George Rule, another son, formerly of the 8th Hussars, is serving with one of the Colonial Defence Forces, and Thomas, formerly of the Cheshires (the “Greys”) and now in the employ of Messrs. Cammell Laird, and Co., would have re-joined the colours had he not be prevented by the loss of a finger of his right hand.

It is with deep regret we learn that one of these gallant brothers has made the final sacrifice for his country, for on Saturday his parents received official notification that Stanley Rule was killed in action in France on February 19th. About a fortnight ago Mrs. Rule had a letter from her son, Richard, with the Royal Engineers in France, intimating that his brother had been killed, but she and her husband hoped against hope that a mistake had been made. Stanley Rule was a fine young fellow, and the utmost sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents of so many patriotic sons. At the outbreak of war Stanley was working for Messrs. Cammell Laird, and Co.
