Dutton Wm. Pte., is named on the Weaverham “Fallen” memorial and a W. Dutton is listed on the R.o.H. William is also named on the Acton Bridge Methodist Chapel Memorial. (This memorial plaque is now located in the Parish Rooms.)
C.W.C.G. Remembered William at Voormezeele Enclosures No.1 and No.2, Belgium. William was with the 6th Bn. Cheshire Regiment No 32570; Private. William died on the 4th Sept. 1917. Son of Samuel and Mary Hannah Dutton of Acton Bridge, Northwich. Personal Inscription; Greater Love Hath No Man Than This.
William’s attestation papers are available through Ancestry and the following is some of that information; William was born about 1889 in Acton Bridge. At the time of enlisting his height was 5ft 10.5in; weight 10st 8lb and his girth is recorded as 35inch with an expansion of 2inches. William was 26 when he enlisted in Northwich on the 8th Nov. 1915. The address is recorded as Sunnyside Cottage Acton Bridge. His trade/occupation, painter. William was not married. Mary Hannah Dutton, mother, appears to be recorded as his next of kin. (Failed to find Sunnyside Cottage on 1911 census but Mary, mother is at census No 224/225 which puts her living down by the River Weaver.) There are several postings recorded but dates and destination are not legible other than 7th July 1917 France. This would be William’s last posting as he was killed in action on the 4th Sept. 1917. On the 31st Dec. 1917 his personal effects were sent to his sister Alice Dutton, The Manor Farm, Acton Bridge.
