Anxiety for Rock Ferry Seaman
Mr. and Mrs. Barlow, of 38 Russell Road, Rock Ferry, have been informed that their eldest son, Frederick W. Barlow, has been missing since about March 10th. It appears young Barlow was a fireman on board a ship sailing from Boston U.S.A., on the homeward trip, and whilst somewhere off the coast of Ireland his ship met a German submarine and was torpedoed, with the result that only seven of the crew of about 63 have been accounted for, and one dead body has been picked up. The young seaman’s father has made enquiries at the shipping office but without avail, but there is still hope that some ship has picked up the remainder of the crew and conveyed them to a foreign port and landed them safe and sound. Young Barlow, who is 27 years of age, was very well-known in Rock Ferry, and his many friends are anxiously awaiting news as to his fate.
Frederick is remebered on the Birkenhead War Memorial kerb panels.
