Birkenhead News 09 September 1916New Ferry Family’s Losses
Two Brothers Killed, Two Wounded.
Some months ago we announced the death in action of Pte. Peter Callaghan, of 8, Ingleby Road, New Ferry. He was a well-known figure to the sporting youth of New Ferry and district, being a prominent member of the Bebington Lads’ Brigade Football Club, which club has suffered severely in the loss of members killed in action. The late Pte. Callaghan had three brothers serving with the colours, of whom one has been killed and the other two murdered. The eldest brother, Sergt. Callaghan, of the South Lancs Regt., joined up at the commencement of hostilities, and was in civil life employed at Price’s Candle Works, Bromborough Pool. He was killed in the great advance, and a touching letter from his captain has been received by his widow, who is left with one child to mourn the loss of a good husband and father.
Pte. James Callaghan joined the Cheshires at the outbreak of war, and was wounded in the recent fighting. He is at present in a Northumberland hospital suffering from a wound in the right arm.
Pte John Humphries Callaghan joined up with the majority of his fellow workers from Port Sunlight, and has been in France for 14 months. He was wounded some time ago but the wound being slight he was treated at the base hospital. It may be added that the mother of these fine lads died soon after the outbreak of war.
