Edward's Story.

Private Edward Basford.

News has been received that private Edward Basford, South Lancashire Regiment, Beam St, and son of Mrs Basford Wood Street, Nantwich, has fallen in action. A comrade writing to his wife and mother said.

“I am extremely sorry to have to inform you after death of your poor Edward, who was killed instantaneously on Wednesday, October 4th, about the middle of the afternoon, and was buried in a soldiers grave, in the presence of his comrades by whom he was loved and respected, and who wish me to forward their deepest sympathy and condolence in your sad bereavement.”

Private Basford was 40 years of age, and until he joined the army, he was a presser in the employment of Messrs. A. Heap and Co., clothing manufacturers of Nantwich. He was married shortly before going to the front. He was greatly esteemed by his fellow employees.
