REGINALD STANSFIELD CARR 

Reginald Stansfield's Story.

Reginald was born in Cheadle, Cheshire in 1897. He lived with his father William, a blacksmith, and his mother Jemima at 18 Church Street. He had 2 brothers, Harold & Frederick and 2 sisters, Mary & Ellen.

  Reginald enlisted in Stockport, originally into the Cheshire Regiment as private 59129. He was later transferred to the 14th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the 22nd April 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Pozieres memorial, Dept De La Somme, France. Panels 36 & 37.

 The Battalion war dairy for that day:

  The 113th Infantry Brigade attacked. Zero hour was 7.30pm. Instructions as per attached map. Two companies, C & D, moved forward in their waves, B Company moved up to occupy the vacated position. Battalion HQ and "A" Company remained stationary. The enemy put down a barrage near our front line. Their machine gun barrage was very accurate on our advancing lines & casualties were heavy. Neither company reached their objective but were held up on a line about 150 yards in front of our original line. The 16th RWF left flank only reached the sunken road and consequently C Company was withdrarn to the original line. D Company was relieved by a part of B Company in their line of shell holes and liason was made with the 19th Durham Light Infantry.

  During the action 2nd Lt Huxley was killed. Lt G Richards died of wounds and lt J G Webb & 2nd Lt M Evans were wounded. Lance Corporal Elias Jones (DCM, MM & bar) died of wounds.

  Casualties were: 5 killed, 95 wounded & 14 missing.
