Arthur's Story.

Born Crewe, August 29, 1896. Enlisted May 16, 1912. Son of Rosina Charlotte Bradley of 1, Moss Square, Crewe. Former pupil of Pedley Street School. Prior to enlisting, was employed in the Crewe North Steam Sheds. HMS Defence was sunk during the Battle of Jutland when struck by successive salvoes from the SMS Friedrich der Grosse, with hits recorded on her after turret, and a direct hit between her forecastle and foremost funnel. She then exploded and went down with all hands, which included 54 officers, 845 crew and 4 civilians. Arthur's father, William, of the Royal Field Artillery, would die in November of the same year.
