Birkenhead Guardsman’s Death.
The death is announced of Private Geo. Carson, of 81, Borough Road, who was killed in the battle of Neuve Chapelle on March 12th. He was a member of the Grenadier Guards, and was 29 years of age. In March, 1914, he went to Canada, but on the outbreak of war he was called to join his regiment. He arrived at London early in August and left for the front immediately, having no time to visit his home. He took part in some heavy fighting, but seemed as cheerful as the circumstances would allow.
Intimation of his death has been received by his wife from Captain H. T. Fletcher, who says: “It is my painful duty to inform you that a report has this day (April 12th) been received from the War Office notifying the death of Private George Carson, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, which occurred overseas between the 10th and 14th March, 1915, and I am to express to you the sympathy and regret of the Army Council at your great loss.”
Before leaving for Canada, Private Carson was employed by the L. and N.W. Railway, and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. He leaves a widow and two young children to mourn his loss, one baby born since its father rejoined the colours.
Although the above newspaper article reports Georg’s death as the 12th March it is in fact the 10th March as recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves database.
