Cuthbert Hayward's Story.
Born on 8 Jun 1880, the second son of W. M. Kirkus of Garsdale, Sefton Park Road, Liverpool
Educated at Liverpool College; at Sedbergh School from 1895 to July 1899 (Prefect); and at Scholar of St. Catherine’s College, Cambridge from 1899 to 1902 (BA, Classical Tripos, 1902).
After leaving school he became a partner is the firm of Messrs. Fisk and Kirkus on the Liverpool Stock Exchange.
Vice President of the Junior Reform Club.
Married in 1906.
Joined the Artists’ Rifles in June 1916
2nd Lieut, RGA in November 1916
In March 1917 he went to France with 283rd Siege Battery, RGA
Prior to his death he was seconded to 51st Heavy Artillery Group, RGA as Intelligence Officer
Killed in action by a shell on 31 July 1917, while near the front lines as a forward intelligence officer for the Group. At the time he was killed he was trying to repair communication lines with the help of an other-rank who was wounded.
