Philip Kirkland's Story.
Born 24 December 1880 at Irlam Heights, Swinton, Lancashire, son of oil merchant and yarn agent, John Knowles and Cecilia Anne Esther, (nee, Watson), Glazebrook. Philip had an elder sister, Cecilia Mary.
In 1891 the family were living at Ingleside, Swinton Park, before setting up home at Twemlow Hall, Holmes Chapel. Philip had served as a Member of Parliament, for South Manchester, since 1912. He was also a serving as a Territorial Officer in the Cheshire Yeomanry. Philip was drafted to the Palestine campaign, 02/03/1916. His actions in the field earned him the award of the Distinguished Service Order. Philip was killed in action at BIREH, Thursday, 07/03/1918, aged 37 years.
