Charles William H.'s Story.

Born Silverdale, September 14, 1888, enlisted Warrington. Son of Paul and Mary Thomas, formerly of Albert Street, Wolstanton. When his mother re-married (to James Meakin), the family resided at 19, Railway Street, Crewe, before they moved to Alma Buildings in Shavington. Charles was a former pupil at Silverdale School, before entering Shavington County Primary School on June 16, 1895. Worked as a farmers cowman prior to enlisting. Was a first day casualty of the Battle of the Somme, during an attack on Beaumont Hamel (attempting to capture "Y" Ravine).
