ANOTHER BIRKENHEAD “SCOT” KILLED

Death of Lance-Corporal A. P. Vance.

We regret to announce the death of Lance-Corporal Arthur Patrick Vance, aged 23, of the 10th Liverpool Scottish. He was killed on the night of the 22nd December, when going from the back trench to the firing line. He was shot in the head, and died instantaneously.

Lance-Corporal Vance was the elder son of Mr. Thomas Arthur Vance and Mrs. Vance, formerly of Chili (sic), South America, and now residing at “Rathmines” Balls Road, Birkenhead, and grandson of the late Mr. Patrick Vance, so well-known in Birkenhead and Liverpool. His younger brother, Eric George, is at present at training in Blackpool with the Liverpool Scottish.

Deceased, who was 23 years of age, was born in Chili, where his father is agent for the Pacific Steam Navigation Company. When nine years of age he came to England and was educated in London. After completing his education he entered the Liverpool offices of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company with whom he had been for six or seven years. His father returned from Chili about three years ago, and came to live in Birkenhead, where he is well known. He intended to return to South America in October, and to take with him his wife and family but he was delayed owing to the war.
