Frederick William's Story.

Birkenhead News  24th May 1916

The Great Sacrifice.

Wife and Six Children Bereaved.

In a letter from Lieut. H.T.W. Oswill the sad news has been conveyed to Mrs. Goodger, of 126, New Chester Road, Port Sunlight, of the death in action of her husband, Frederick William Goodger. Sergeant Goodger joined the Wirral Battalion at the outbreak of war as private, and was soon promoted to the rank of sergeant. Prior to the war the sergeant was employed in the engineering department at the power house of Messrs. Lever Bros. He met his death on the day following his 33rd birthday, and leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss. The eldest is only nine years old, and the youngest three months.

The following letter was received from Lieut. Oswill :- “It is my painful duty to inform you of the death in action of your husband, Sergt. F.W. Goodger. He was one of our best N.C.O.’s, and in his position as platoon sergeant he will be a very serious loss. He had two of the best qualities an N.C.O. can have – courage and the power of leadership. Every man in the company liked and respected him, and the officers thoroughly relied upon him. Please accept our deepest sympathy.”
