Gerald John's Story.
Born November 23, 1885. Son of Cora Louis of 6, Camden Place, Crewe and husband of Mary Louis (nee Collier) of “Lindenlow” Wistaston, whom he married in Blackpool on June 14, 1911. Served his apprenticeship in Crewe Works and was later Loco Foreman at Nuneaton, Preston and Longsight. Served before the war in the 2nd Cheshire Royal Engineers (Railway) Volunteers (1905-12). Received his commission on November 11, 1914. Promoted to Lieutenant on March 15, 1915 and went to France on October 4, 1915. Promoted to Captain on April 30, 1916. Received his fatal wounds at St. Nazaire, when a shell struck his car, which was leading a convoy of four lorries loaded with shells for the Front. Some sources state he died on May 23.
