George Alfred's Story.

George served as a Wireless Operator/ Air Gunner flying in Blenheim IV aircraft with 53 Squadron RAF. 53 quadron were in France until the fall of France in 1940 when they returned to England where they were based at RAF Detling near Maistone carrying out bombing missions on mainland Europe. On 26th November 1940 George's aircraft along with 5 others took of and flew to Ghent in Belgium where they bombed an oil plant. Two aircraft including George's failed to return from the mission and they were declared missing presumed dead. On 27th November two aircraft were sent out to look for the missing aircraft but they were only able to find a three man dinghy floating in the sea with no sign of survivors. George is memorialised at the Runnymede RAF Memorial, the Wistaton Memorial and the Wistaston Memorial Hall memorial plaque.
