Arthur's Story.

HMS Egret

Arthur served as a Telegraphist on HMS Egret. HMS was an Egret class sloop, a sloop being of a similar size to a destroyer but with a slower speed and more suited to anti submarine warfare. The Egret had a distinguished career in WW2 including:

January 1942 Convoy Escort
October 1942 Supported Operation Torch the Allied landings in North Africa.

In August 1943 she was on anti submarine patrol in the Bay of Biscay when she was attacked by German Dornier 217 aircraft carrying Henschel Glide Bombs controlled by joysticks and was thus the first ship ever to be sunk by a guided missile. 194 of her crew including Arthur were lost.
