JOHN THOMAS DOYLE 

John Thomas's Story.

John was born in Romily, Cheshire in 1899. He lived with his father Christopher, a railway labourer, and his mother Hannah at 25 Green Lane. He enlisted in Stockport on the 3rd June 1916. He entered France on the 17th July 1917. He was killed in action on the 22nd April 1918. He is buried at Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery, Albert, Dept DE La Somme, France.  I  A11.

 The Battalion war diary for that day:

  Zero hour was 7.30pm. Two companies, C & D, moved forward in their waves, at which time B Company moved forward and occupied the lines vacated. Battalion HQ & "A" Company remained stationary. Our own barrage was somewhat ragged. The enmy put down a barrage and very quickly, near our front line. Their machine gun barage was very accurate on our advancing lines & casualties were heavy. Neither company reached their objective but were held up on a line about 150 yards in front of our original line. The 16th RWF and left flank only reached the sunken road and consequently C Company was withdrawn to the original line.

  D Company reas relieved by a portion of B Company in their line of shell holes about 150 yards ahead of our original line, and liason was made with the 19th Durham Light Infantry. on the left.

 Our casualties were: 5 killed, 95 wounded & 14 missing.
