HOYLAKE PRIVATE KILLED
Bravery in the Trenches.
Another well-known Hoylake soldier to sacrifice his life for his country is Private Colin Chappell, general manager of the Royal Insurance Company, and who lives at “Brentwood,” Meols Drive, Hoylake. The sad news was received on Saturday intimating that the young soldier, who was 27 years of age, had been killed earlier in the week. The news was sent by a comrade of the 6th King’s (Liverpool) Regiment.
The late Private Chappell was at one time a lieutenant in the 5th Liverpool Regiment, but on the outbreak of war he enlisted as a private in the 6th Regiment, preferring this to reinstatement in his commission, as, on account of a troublesome throat affection, he feared he might not be able efficiently to fulfil the duties. He was educated at the Merchant Taylor’s School, and was a member of the football fifteen. He was afterwards for some years with Messrs. J. H. Townley and Sons, on the Stock Exchange.
The letter which conveyed the news of Mr. Chappell’s death also relates that when last in the trenches he and another private went out in the open to rescue a wounded soldier of the Dorset Regiment.
