William Herbert's Story.
Born 14 August 1880, Pangbourne, Berkshire, son Doctor Herbert and Sarah Louisa, (nee Rainsford) Watney, of Buckland, Pangbourne, Berkshire. His siblings shown on the 1911 census were May Evelyn, Winifred Eva and Martyn Herbert. He was educated at Eaton College and Trinity College, Cambridge; here he gained his M.A. (Cantab). In 1911 he served his pupiledge to Civil Engineering with, Thames Ironworks, having worked as an assistant engineer on the Sudan Irrigation Service in 1907. He then became an Associate of the Institute of Civil Engineering.
In the spring of 1911 he married Mary Edith Gull, registered at Bradfield, Berkshire. They had two children, Lindley Herbert and Margaret Anne. They lived for a period at 97, Albert Bridge Road, Battersea, London. William was drafted to France, 17 March 1915; he was killed in action, at Aubers Ridge, Fromelles, Monday, 10 May 1915, aged 35 years.
