Peter's Story.
Peter was born in Lymm in 1894, 2nd son of Thomas and Charlotte Leigh of Statham and had lived in Lymm all his life. He was educated at Lymm Parochial School and worked for Mr Pell Arden at the age of 13 as a newsboy. After leaving school he was employed at Mr Henry Lloyd's farm in Thelwall and lastly for the Manchester Ship Canal Co Ltd as an apprentice blacksmith.He initally joined the Lymm Territorial's in 1910 and re-enlisted with the South Lancashire Regiment when war broke out.
He was killed in action on 1st April 1915 aged 19
A letter from Sergeant Harold Clare to his mother dated 2nd April 1915 says:
"I am sorry to say that poor 'Peter' Leigh died of wounds received by shrapnel yesterday. We did all that was possible but he died peacefully soon after he was struck. He was buried with a ceremony in the village so we all have the satisfaction of knowing where he is"
