Dan's Story.
EARLY LIFE
Youngest son of Daniel and Elizabeth Ann Rose of 22 Brook Street, Macclesfield, Cheshire.
WW1 SERVICE
Dan enlisted in April 1916 with the South Lancashire Regiment, service number 4950, and was later given service number 202521. He was drafted to France in August 1916, and reported wounded on 20 August 1917.
On 13 September 1918, the Macclesfield Times reported that Dan was assumed to have been killed:
Mrs Rose, 15 Byrons Lane, Macclesfield, has been officially notified that her husband, Pte Dan Rose, South Lancs Regt, who was previously reported missing, was killed in action or died from wounds on 11th April or shortly afterwards. Pte Rose, who was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Rose, 22 Brook Street, was 27 years of age. He enlisted in April 1916 and went out to France in August the same your. Last November he came home on leave. Educated at the Centenary Day School, he attended the Brunswick Wesleyan Chapel and Sunday School. Prior to enlistment he was employed by the Macclesfield Equitable Provident Society Ltd. A brother is at present in hospital in France.
COMMEMORATION
Private Dan Rose is buried in Chocques Military Cemetery, France, grave ref. IV. C. 9.
In Macclesfield, Private Dan Rose is commemorated on the Park Green, Town Hall, St Michael’s Church, St George’s Church and the Brunswick Wesleyan Methodist Church war memorials. He is also remembered on a family gravestone in Macclesfield Cemetery, plot P.12456.
