BIRKENHEAD “FORMIDABLE” VICTIM

Death of a Gallant Tar

SERVED ON CRESSY AND ABOUKIR

We regret to announce the death of Petty Officer A.E. Morrison, who was drowned in the sinking of H.M.S. Formidable. He resided at 98, Old Bidston Road, Birkenhead, and leaves a widow and a nine-year old son to mourn his loss. This gallant tar had served in the Navy for 12 years, after which he joined the National Reserve. He was called up on August 22nd, and was appointed to H.M.S. Cressy. He served on board that ship for about a month and was then transferred to H.M.S Aboukir, leaving this vessel to join a mine sweeper two days before she was sunk, together with the Hogue and the Cressy.

Mr Morrison was an employee of the Birkenhead Branch at, 53 Hamilton Square, of the London and Manchester Assurance Co, and his cheery personality will be missed by a large number of people with whom he daily came in contact.

Mrs. Morrison has been notified by the Admiralty of her husband’s death, but she still fondly clings to the hope that he has been picked up by an outward-bound vessel which has not yet reached port.
