Birkenhead News  1917

BIRKENHEAD SAILOR KILLED.

FORMER MEMBER OF SHAFTESBURY’S BOYS CLUB.

News was received from the Admiralty on Tuesday of the death of Seaman John William Littler, who was killed as a result of an explosion on his ship. He was 25 years of age, and was the son of Mr. P. Littler, 44, Jackson Street, Birkenhead.

The gallant sailor had been in the Navy for about seven years when war was declared. He took part in many actions, having been through the fighting at Antwerp in the initial stages of the war, and was on the Mauretania at the time of her exciting encounter with a German submarine. Almost two years ago his brother was killed in the Dardanelles. The deceased man, who was a former member of the Shaftesbury’s Boys’ Club, was well known and greatly respected by all with whom he came into contact.
