Arthur Henry's Story.

Arthur Henry Bannister was born in Wincham, Cheshire in 1892, one of eight children born to Thomas (a cab proprietor) and Sarah (a cab proprietor) of 22-24 Church Street, Wincham, later moving to 47, Wincham Lane, Wincham.

Arthur joined the Royal Navy where he became Stoker 1st Class no. SS/109475 aboard H.M.S. Recruit.

Arthur was killed in action on the 1st May 1915.

On that fateful day:

On 1 May 1915 while patrolling with HMS Recruit (1896), she was sunk by torpedo fired from the German submarine UB-6 of the newly formed Flanders Flotilla in the southern North Sea, 30 miles south-west of the Galloper Light Vessel - off the Thames Estuary, England. She broke in two and sank with the loss of 39 men, 4 officers and 22 crewmen were rescued.
