Frederick Paul's Story.
Birkenhead News 09 June 1917FELL IN MESOPOTAMIA.
Private Paul Herbert.
The portrait appended is that of Pte. Paul Herbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Herbert, of 176 Cleveland Street, Birkenhead, who has made the great sacrifice. He was killed in action on April 30th, in Mesopotamia, where he was serving with the 8th Batt., Cheshire Regt. It is about two years since Pte. Herbert joined “the Cheshires” and after going through his preliminary training he went out to Mesopotamia, and has never since been home. Married on one Sunday, he was on his “way East” upon the following one. This is a case when even deeper sympathy than is usually felt for a wife bereaved of her husband who has fallen in his country’s cause will be extended to Mrs. Herbert. From the age of 14 to 21 the late Pte. Herbert served an apprenticeship with Mr. J. H. Hurley, hairdresser, Birkenhead, and then took up a position in the refrigerating department of the Mersey Dock and Harbour Board at Woodside.
He has been intimately associated with the St. Nathaniel’s Mission Church, Cleveland Street, and was a prominent and well-known all-round athlete. To Mrs. Herbert and the deceased’s parents the sincere sympathy of many friends goes out in the deep loss they have sustained.
