John Lee's Story.

John was born in Edgeley, the son of Sarah Isabelle and the late Joseph Henshall, 105 Chapel Street. Prior to his enlistment into the army in September 1914, he worked at the Reddish Vale Printworks. He was killed on the third day of the Battle of the Somme. After the attack, he was posted as "missing". It was not until June 1917 that the War Office made an official presumption that he must have been killed. His body was never found and identified.
