Richard's Story.

C.W.G.C. remember a Richard Eaton at the Thiepval Memorial, France, Pier and Face 6D and 7D. He was with the 15th Bn. Royal Scots, Service No 17360, died 1st July 1916. No family details added.

Cheshirebmd does not record the birth of a Richard Eaton in Cheshire in the years 1875-1900 but Freebmd does, this was in the June Quarter of 1883 in Northwich. The 1911 census records a Richard Eaton, the address is Bratt Evan, The Arcade, he appears to be a salesman in the finishing room with the Drapery Dept. He is aged 27 and single, born Northwich. Cheshirebmd records the marriage of Richard Eaton/Emily Bowyer in 1915 at St. Wilfrid, Davenham.

N.A.M.C. have a card for a Richard Eaton, Serjeant, with the Royal Scots No 17360. Awarded British and Victory medals. T.o.W. and D.o.E. not addressed and no reference to his death.

Northwich Guardian 14th July 1916. MANCHESTER PALS. (Part of a longer article.)
The Manchester “Pals” in which there are more than 100 Northwich “boys” – many of them belonging to the clerical staff of Messrs Brunner Mond and Co., and the sons of prominent local traders – have seen some of the hardest fighting. They were joined up to the French for a big attack and had to encounter the cream of the Germany Army. This explains why the casualty list amongst officers and men is so heavy. So far we have heard of five Mid-cheshire “Pals” who have fallen in action – Lance Corporal Douglas Eachus, Sergeant ?? Lambert, Lance Corporal Jack Wellbourn, Sergeant J. Brocklehurst and Private Arnold Johnson. Quite a number are now in hospital suffering from wounds but happily in the majority of cases the injuries are comparatively slight. One well-known young man Lance Corporal Frank H. Hobson is stated to be missing and this disquieting news comes from one of his closest friends. Lance Corporal Gerald Croft.
In addition to the losses in the “Pals” we regret to record the deaths of other Northwich soldiers including Sergeant Richard Eaton of the Royal Scotts and Private George Elmore who for a number of years was a prominent figure in local football circles and afterward showed distinction as a footballer in Scotland, also Private S. Goodier of the Cheshires, who parents resides at Barnton.
