Charles Herbert's Story.
Herbert was born in Heaton Norris and his parents, Charles and Lydia (nee Dickinson) lived at 56 Lloyd Street. He worked as a piecer at Broadstone Spinning Mills, Reddish. The local newspaper, reporting his death, noted that he was a member of the SSS Brotherhood (believed to be the Socialist Sunday School Brotherhood – a nationwide body of the time). He was a pre-war member of the Territorials (original service number 1210) and was mobilised in August 1914. Herbert is recorded as having “died of wounds” and was in hospital in Boulogne when he died.
