Harold's Story.
Birkenhead News 02 December 1916Died from Wounds.
Stayed by his Comrade.
The sympathy of Birkenhead residents goes out to Mr. and Mrs. W. Haslehurst, of 254 Borough Road, on the death of their youngest son, Private Harold Haslehurst, of the East Lancs Regt., attached to the King’s.
The circumstances of Pte. Haslehurst’s death were particularly ennobling. He joined the Army on February 11th this year, and went to France on July 11th. He was wounded on November 11th. For four days and four nights, after receiving his wounds, he stayed by the side of a comrade whose injuries were more severe, and as a consequence contracted frost-bitten feet. He was brought over to England, where it was deemed advisable to amputate both feet. He died on November 29th, a few days after the operation was performed. He was in his 26th year.
Before joining the Army he was a hairdresser – the profession followed by his father – with Mr. Cavanagh, of Liverpool, and previous to his going there was for several years with Mr. Dean, of West Kirby.
