Herbert Percival's Story.
Herbert was born in Cheadle, Cheshire in January 1888. He lived with his father William, a road carrier, and his mother Sarah at 3 Brooklyn Road, Cheadle. He had a half sister Elizabeth and a brother Francis Moore. By 1911 they were living at 2 Wilmslow Road, Cheadle. Herbert was working for his father.
Herbert married Hannah Ravenscroft in 1916 and they lived at The Crescent, Stockport. He enlisted in Stockport, originally into the Army Service Corps as private 189384. He was killed in action on the 27th
August 1918.
The Battalion war diary for that day:
The 113th Brigade marched on Longueval, without any preliminary artillery fire. The 13th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers acting as advance guard, B Company on the right and D Company on the left flank. Just short of the village the battalion was held up by a nest of machine guns and suffered considerable casualties. About 300 prisoners were captured. In the afternoon the battalion slightly withdrew and took up position S16 and behind the 14th & 16th Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Our casualties estimated at 100.
