Other than the above information, recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, nothing is known for certain about Sydney. His service number indicates that he served overseas with the 145th (Stockport) Heavy Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. This was a Territorial unit and Sydney’s medal entitlement records, at the National Archives, show that his original service number was 4141, dating his enlistment to 1916 or before. The unit is not recorded by the Graves Commission which suggests that he had probably returned to Britain some considerable time before he died and was no longer on its strength. It is not known whether he was home recovering from wounds or illness.

Cheshire County Memorial Project would like to thank John Hartley for this information on Samuel.
